Camino Portuguese Day 13. 05/01. Coimbra.

Coimbra was a Muslim town till late 12 century. It was a capital of Portugal where most of the kings were born.

Coimbra’s Old Cathedral represents  Portuguese Romanesque Style.

Beautiful church in the heart of this historical town is Igreja de Santa Cruz.

One more Largo da Fierra

In 16th century Coimbra asserts itself as the Portuguese university city.

The University of Coimbra is listed as UNESCO World Heritage site.

The gallery of kings portraits at the university. Total 38 kings.

The old library itself worthy to visit! Ceiling paintings are amazing!

Bats!🦇 at night they protect books by eating insects, specially moth.

The library has three levels, with a student's prison in the lower level.

Coimbrão Fado is different from Lisboa Fado where women typically sung about their poor life. Coimbrão Fado is sung exclusively by men and demands a strict dress code. Music groups and singers wear the academic dress and sung at night, in the city squares and streets.

Fado was used as a form of intervention among the students, they used ballads as a way to express their political opinions at a time when a word was more powerful than one thousand guns.

I wasn't able to see or hear it, they usually start after 9pm... but I was needed to go... on my way!
